Cooling Mats for Dogs: What are They and Types

Translated by Nick R

You may have heard about these dog cooling blankets that are amazing during hot seasons, but you have doubts about how they work. And if this is the first time you hear about them, let me tell you everything you need to know before getting one for your pet.

What are dog cooling blankets and what are they for?

Just as the name suggests, they are a kind of blanket, rug, or mat that usually contain a cooling gel inside. These blankets absorb your pet’s body heat and then release cold, cooling and lowering his temperature.

Once all the heat has been absorbed and your pet’s temperature has been lowered, the blanket will stop cooling; however, as soon as your dog walks away, the blanket resets itself and will be cooling again after a few minutes.

It’s recommended to leave this mat in the shade because if you leave it in a sunny place, it will absorb the heat and won’t cool down.

So these blankets are ideal in hot weather when we see that our doggies are looking for places to cool down and lie on the floor hoping to get some relief. Also, cooling mats could help us avoid heat stroke potentially deadly for pets.

Types of cooling mats for dogs

Not all types of cooling mats use gel, so their performance and maintenance will vary.

Cooling blanket with water

These blankets don’t contain the cooling gel, what you have to do to make them work is to fill them with water, you just have to put them in a bucket full of water or in the bathtub until the mat swells with water.

Your dog can then lie on top and cool off in the natural cooling of the water.

Mat with fabric layers

This mat has no gel or water. Its cooling effect is given by the three layers of different types of fabric it is made of (ice silk, cotton, and breathable mesh.

However, this one doesn’t refresh as well as the other types of blankets.

Gel mat

This is the best type of mat because it doesn’t require refilling with water and is very refreshing for dogs. As I told you, the gel alone absorbs the dog’s body heat.

After cooling the animal, you need to leave it for a few minutes (without your pet on top of it) so that the gel particles can recover and cool down again.

Note: When buying one of these blankets you should keep in mind your dog’s measurements since they come in different sizes, choose one that is the exact size of your dog or a little bigger, but never smaller, clearly.

Should you get a cooling blanket for your dog?

Is it a good idea to get this product? Definitely.

Dogs don’t get rid of heat as easily as we do, they sweat through their paws and sometimes this is not enough for them to lower their temperature optimally, which is why this item is ideal.

Whether you live in a hot place or for the summer, the cooling mat is an item that will help your furry friend a lot. In addition, it can also be useful if you like to travel with your dog, as it will be a very comfortable way to travel and prevent your dog from suffering from the heat.

Which cooling mat is best for my dog?

The different types of blankets are between 25 to 50 USD on the internet. Normally, the gel mat is the most expensive because it works best and needs the least care to perform its function.

To know which one to buy, you should take into account how hot the place where you live or where you plan to travel is, and depending on this you can choose which one your dog needs.

If it is a very hot place, the one with gel is recommended since it is the one that will cool your pet the most. On the other hand, if the place is not very hot, or you only want it so that your pet is comfortable on some sunny days, you can choose the one made of fabric or the one you have to fill with water. In this case, you will also save a few cents.
